A Fresh Groove from Amen Studio

There’s something exciting about starting a new track, especially when the brief calls for feel, pocket, and a bit of personality. Recently at Amen Studio in Bristol, we worked on a funk-influenced project packed with laid-back energy, warm tones, and a groove designed to make heads nod. The track sits at 110 BPM in the key of E and runs just over two minutes, but plenty went into shaping those two minutes.

This project is a great example of how an online session drummer can bring a track to life without the artist needing to be in the same room. The goal was simple: capture a relaxed but confident beat with subtle dynamics and a strong rhythmic backbone. Inspired by the sound and vibe of Lettuce, the production leaned into funk, electronic elements, and modern beats while keeping the drums organic and human.

Working from Amen Studio meant we could focus on getting the right tones from the start. Good drums, thoughtful tuning, and solid microphone choices all helped set the stage for a smooth recording process.

The Drum Kit Behind the Groove

Every good session starts with the right instruments, and for this project we used a beautiful vintage kit: the Ludwig Super Classic 1965. With a 22″ bass drum, 13″ rack tom, and 16″ floor tom, it’s a setup that has stood the test of time for a reason. Compact, punchy, and incredibly versatile, it delivers everything from jazz articulation to deep rock tones.

The snare drum was a Keith Carlock Gretsch Signature Snare, which brought a slightly drier tone to the session. That dryness helped the backbeat speak clearly without overpowering the groove. It’s one of those drums that instantly feels comfortable in a mix.

For cymbals, we leaned on Zildjian classics: 15″ Kerope hi-hats and a 22″ K Constantinople medium ride. These cymbals added warmth and musicality rather than harsh top end, which suited the track perfectly.

This combination gave the session the flexibility you’d expect from experienced session drummers for hire—gear that responds well to dynamics and allows subtle changes in touch to shine through.

Capturing the Sound

Drum tone starts long before microphones are placed. The kit was tuned using a Tune-Bot with a medium to high tuning across the snare and toms, while the kick drum was kept low and open without a front head. This setup created resonance and character, helping the drums breathe within the track.

The microphones played a big role in shaping the sound. A pair of Lauten Audio Horizon tube microphones captured overhead detail and room ambience, while a Shure SM57 handled snare duties and an AKG D12 VR focused on the kick drum. Together they captured a balanced and lively kit sound.

Signal then ran through high-quality preamps including the Daking Mic-Pre IV and the Focusrite ISA 828, both known for clarity and musical warmth.

This combination made the drum recording session smooth and efficient, proving once again that preparation is everything when delivering professional online session drums for artists working from anywhere.

Performance, Mixing, and Final Touches

On the performance side, the brief sounded simple enough on paper, but grooves always have their challenges. The biggest one here was maintaining tight 16th notes on the hi-hat while keeping the feel relaxed. Funk demands precision, but it also needs personality.

Three takes were recorded, with the third delivering the best balance of energy and pocket. Sometimes it’s not about perfection, but about capturing the take that feels the most alive.

During mixing, the focus shifted to helping the snare drum sit comfortably in the track. A Neve Portico compressor paired with an API 550A EQ gave the snare shape and presence. Some careful work around the 7 kHz area helped it cut through without clashing with other instruments.

Matching the space of the reference track proved tricky, so reverb on the snare and room channels helped the kit feel bigger without losing clarity. Importantly, no samples were used—everything you hear came directly from the performance.

Projects like this highlight why artists continue to look for a reliable remote session drummer when producing music from different locations. Whether you’re searching for a studio drummer for hire, comparing the top session drummers, or trying to find the best session drummer for your project, the goal is always the same: great feel, great sound, and a track that connects.

And that’s exactly what we aim to deliver at Amen Studio every time.
